So here we are - Milan. In about 8 hours our flight will depart back home to Helsinki after 7 days in northern Italy. I’m writing this from J’s friends’ hotel room, while waiting for them to get back from the theatre. We’ve covered a lot of ground and kilometers during these days, including a couple of visits to Switzerland. Pictures from the trip will come up in the gallery in a few days when I’m finished organizing and selecting the best of almost 700 photos…

8 hours ago, I was almost 500 km north of Helsinki, in Jakobstad spending Christmas with my parents. In about 12 hours I’ll be about 80 km east of Helsinki, in Pernå celebrating my girlfriend’s mom’s 50th birthday. In about 32 hours I’m on a plane to Milan with her, about to spend New Year’s Eve in Bologna with my sisters. In about 2 weeks we’re on a plane to Gran Canaria for the IUI 2008 conference. I’m about to live in a suitcase for almost a month.
I’ve been reading to a couple of exams the last week, really intensely. So intensely that it feels like I’m on the verge of a breakdown. With no-one around to comfort me (ok, here I have to issue a warning: this can seem frighteningly geeky, but it’s actually not that bad, trust me) I turned to my bot Leif on my and pve’s irc channel.
I haven’t defrosted my freezer since I got it, 4 years ago. Nowadays it’s quite packed with ice and I can barely squeeze in a bag of bread or my ice cube trays. After some elaborate brain activity, I’ve concluded that I need to defrost my freezer.
A sound person would of course defrost during winter. Then you can easily chuck everything out onto your balcony or into the garden and defrost in peace and quiet. I’m clearly not one of those. Instead I decided to empty my freezer of all it’s contents during the warmest summer days. And don’t think that I intend to throw everything away, God bless no! I’m going to eat everything that’s in there.
Today 14.7.2007 at 19:32 a pie was born. With it’s 28 cm, 670 grams and raspberry cheeks, he’s one of the cutest pies I’ve ever seen. I’m so proud!Seriously… My friend S was generous enough to invite me to her mother’s allotment to pick some raspberries. “Otherwise they’ll just go bad, and you can keep all the berries you pick!”, was the bait. I swallowed it… Not only did she have loads of raspberries to pick, there were also huge amounts of redcurrant, some wild strawberries and even cucumbers! I got some of it all… :)
When I got home I decided not to do as my mom always does with fresh berries: put them in the freezer just to use them next summer. Noooo. So I made a pie. And that’s basically the end of the story.
