Where are all the chocolate eggs?

Strange feeling spending easter on my own for the first time. Up until now I’ve gone home to my parents in Jakobstad for easter but this year I decided to stay in Helsinki. I’ve got lots of stuff to take care of, so I thought I’d use these days to tick off a few lines on my todo list. My schoolwork has suffered a bit when I’ve been busy going to all these parties all the time. So finally a whole weekend off, let’s do some work, yay…

Lonely feeling though. Even though this is like any other weekend, the mere knowledge that all my friends have left Helsinki for the holidays makes it feel odd. Even the girl I’m dating is out of town, sigh… Oh, it isn’t that bad actually. I’ve got a few friends also spending easter here, so I thought I’d have a couple of them over for dinner on Saturday. Three course meal with lots of wine. NO, shit. I promised myself not to drink anything for two weeks after that Estonia-adventure. Ah, fuck it, it’s only easter once a year! (My god, when am I going to take things seriously again…?)

My friend M is coming home from Germany tonight to spend easter with his family. His plane arrives at 22:50 (right about now) and we decided to go for a beer when he reaches Helsinki, which is about 23:30. He’s going to spend the night at my place and leave for Jakobstad at 07:00 in the morning. Another under 7h night to look forward to. Should probably go to work tomorrow as well, even though it’s Good Friday. I’ve got stuff to take care of, as I mentioned.

Got to return some videotapes. Catch you later.

Beerdrinking in Estonia

Phew, what a weekend. I had to skip school/work today just to recover from the adventures in Tartu. Our friendship organization Eesti Üliõpilaste Selts celebrated their 136th anniversary and we were of course invited to the party. An 8-man strong squad from the Ostrobotnian students’ associations decided to check out what the estonian parties are like. And what a party it became.

About learning

Yesterday I had by far the most interesting lecture this spring. The odd thing about it was that it was in a course that has been really boring. It’s a compulsory course on the theory of computation (it even sounds boring, doesn’t it), so I can’t flunk it even if I wanted to. I’ve attended the lectures and tried to do the exercises, but everything seems to go into one ear and come out the other, and I don’t understand anything. So either the topic is too difficult or I’m just too stupid.

But then it happened. I’ve got two friends doing this course as well, and they had more or less the same problem. In mid-course (about two weeks ago) we decided to really sit down and thoroughly look at the exercises together. I say goddamn! I’ve learned more during these two-three times we’ve met than during the whole of last semester. Just sitting down discussing the problems and sharing thoughts and ideas helps a lot. And if you even manage to explain some thing to your friend, then you really know that you’ve learned it well. So, when I attended the lecture yesterday, I actually understood what the lecturer said and as a matter of fact, it was really interesting!

Sleepless nights and yet another party

We fought well but it wasn’t enough. The Urho-mystery was won by another team yesterday morning. We only had one clue yet to get from the organizers, but apparently they were asleep when we requested it, so the other team beat us to the treasure. Anyway, it was a fantastic experience although I haven’t been sleeping much this week since we’ve been crunching riddles all night. Looking forward to a sequel next year.

This weekend was supposed to be a sober and quiet one, since my parents are visiting (sleeping at my place) and I’ve been partying more than enough this spring already. I was almost on my way to this student’s union party on Saturday but forgot to respond to the invitation in time. “Just as well”, I thought and was already looking forward to a peaceful weekend for once. But easily convinced as I am, my friend talked me into coming anyway and arranged with the organizers yesterday morning that I could come. Now afterwards, I thank him. The party was really good and there were loads of new, interesting and sweet people there. Life is full of surprises. My mom got worried and called me when I hadn’t gotten home at 7 in the morning. Luckily she isn’t here all the time - for her own sake…
